About Sofia Waldorf-inspired School
Sofia Waldorf-inspired School is a non-stock, non-profit and non-sectarian school in Baguio City. We accept students regardless of race, creed, gender and economic status.
Humble Beginnings
SOFIA began in 2008 as a parent-child Saturday program in order to provide parents and their children an ideal atmosphere for bonding and learning with the vision of slowly preparing the space for a Waldorf-inspired school. The former library of one of the parents of the school was transformed into a playgarden space to accommodate the program. After some sessions, the need for a bigger space became apparent as more and more children and parents attended the program.
In 2009, with the help of one of the parents who attended the Saturday program, SOFIA was able to transfer to its current location, and the children's center became a reality. Sofia is moving to its new home at Upper General Luna, Baguio City.
The Present
For now, SOFIA is sustained by a rich and active spirit of volunteerism by its core believers and supporters. However, because of developments and growth needed to happen for a non-stock, non-profit school to continue, funds need to be raised in order to continue the vision and formally open its doors to as many children and as wide a community as possible.
Because of its thrust of providing Steiner/ Waldorf Education to children regardless of their backgrounds, all forms of donations and support are welcomed, such that, as an example, parents who can pay more to sustain the school could pay more and parents who cannot pay as much can pay through services or other means.
However, the annual budget still needs to be met in order for the school to sustain itself. While this set up is also new to the city of Baguio, the advocates of Sofia have faith in keeping the spirit of community alive in a communal environment that adapts to diverse and evolving circumstances and social contexts.
SOFIA is non selective, independent and self- administered. It offers a comprehensive curriculum that is socially and culturally relevant.
It wishes to grow a step at a time, adding a grade each year until a full 8- year cycle is completed and repeated, enabling children to grow with the school and complete their education in a school faithful to Steiner/Waldorf principles.
When the time comes and an upper school is envisioned, SOFIA will work towards establishing grades 9- 12 so that the human education that Waldorf Education is will be truly realized.
